Video Game Art Styles
Here is a Tumblr blog someone mentioned yesterday on Twitter, that collects screenshots from various games (mostly indy, but triple A as well), thus giving a glimpse of various visual styles.
Portal game on TI
Just heard via Geoffrey Dorne that someone wrote a 2D Portal game for the TI calculator. How awesome is that?

When rendering is that beautiful
Sébastien Linage, who is a lead artist for Electronic Arts, published a video that completely nails what I value in rendering.
This video is just a montage of in game scenery shots from Need For Speed: The Run. There are no action scenes, no race, no cars running, no tires screaming: only a flyby through the environments crafted by the team who worked on this game. The scenes and the rendering are just that beautiful: beautiful enough so simply showing them with some soundtrack already makes a nice video.
Those guys really did an awesome job in that regard.
Kerning, spacing and shaping
The upcoming educational website Method of Action features two online typography games to discover kerning and spacing, and letter shaping.
Both of them take less than 15 minutes to complete, unless of course you start over and over to improve your score.
