On the way he references a couple of previous articles, that also reference other resources; I think it&#8217;s a good opportunity to list some of them. They all tell a part of the story and I recommend reading all of them to get the complete picture.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.humus.name\/index.php?page=News&amp;ID=255\">A couple of notes about Z<\/a>, 2009, by <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/_Humus_\">Emil Persson<\/a>, on why Z-buffer is non linear and how to counter the loss of precision.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mynameismjp.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/22\/attack-of-the-depth-buffer\/\">Attack of the depth buffer<\/a>, 2010, by <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/MyNameIsMJP\">Matt Pettineo<\/a>, on visualizing depth buffer error when using different buffer formats.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/outerra.blogspot.jp\/2012\/11\/maximizing-depth-buffer-range-and.html\">Maximizing Depth Buffer Range and Precision<\/a>, 2012, by <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/cameni\">Brano Kemen<\/a>, with a significant part on how OpenGL and DirectX are differently affected by the precision issue (spoiler: OpenGL&#8217;s coordinate convention hurts pretty badly in this case; fortunately as Nathan Reed&#8217;s article points, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opengl.org\/registry\/specs\/ARB\/clip_control.txt\">an extension now fixes this<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reedbeta.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/03\/depth-precision-visualized\/\">Depth Precision Visualized<\/a>, 2015, by <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Reedbeta\">Nathan Reed<\/a>, on visualizing depth buffer precision as a function of distance, when using different buffer formats and Z representations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nathan Reed recently published a blog article plotting his numerical findings of Z-buffer precision under different uses.
